Symptoms

The symptoms of inflammatory bowel disease vary in severity from person to person and flare up or improve at different times; they include:

  abdominal pain and tenderness

  bleeding from the rectum

  weight loss

  tiredness

diarrhoea (sometimes with blood or mucus)

You should tell your doctor if you experience some or all of these symptoms.

Patients will also experience periods of remission, when they are free from symptoms. The aim of treatment is to prolong these periods of remission as much as possible, to give the patient the best possible quality of life.
